About Telegram
Telegram is a cloud-hosted cross-platform instant messaging service and application that is available for free.
On smartphones (Android, iOS, and Windows Phone), PCs (Windows, macOS, and Linux), and the web, the client application is free, open source, and GPLv3-licensed. Users can exchange unlimited amounts of documents, images, and videos.
By default, the program uses encryption between the application and Telegram servers, with the latter having access to the content of messages sent and received, rather than end-to-end encryption between users (they are stored in the cloud). End-to-end encryption is still a possibility, but only if it is specifically turned on at the start of every chat.
Because the client portion is free and the server portion is proprietary, some cryptologists criticize "security by obscurity," which they view as less effective than disclosing the encryption method that is being utilized (which allows possible publishing flaws).
Nikolai and Pavel Dourov, the creators of VKontakte, launched Telegram in 2013 when the Russian government seized over VKontakte. The Telegram communications protocol was developed by Nikolai Durov, and his brother provided financial backing for the venture through his Digital Fortress fund.
The two brothers, who opposed Vladimir Putin, wanted to find a means to speak secretly without being observed by the FSB, the Russian secret service in charge of matters pertaining to internal security.
The service had 100,000 active users as of October 2013. Telegram declared 35 million monthly users and 15 million daily active users on March 24, 2014. Censorship efforts, such as those made by the South Korean government, greatly boost the service's popularity. In December 2014, Telegram revealed that it was gaining a million new users every week and that its daily message volume had increased to over two billion in just five months. At the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in September 2015, Pavel Dourov declared that the service has achieved 12 billion messages sent daily.
The media reports that Telegram is a popular app for terrorists who use its encrypted communication capabilities in relation to the attacks on November 13, 2015, in France. Telegram has now blocked 78 channels that are linked to the Islamic State organization as a result of these findings. Alexander Agueyev, a Russian lawmaker, suggests prohibiting Telegram in Russia, although few people back the idea.
The interior ministers of Germany and France requested legislation on the use of encrypted texting in Europe from the European Union in August 2016. France and Germany are primarily aiming their request at Telegram, which has been used by a number of terrorists in both nations to communicate in an encrypted manner.
Many French political figures and their teams, on the right and the left, reportedly use this app, according to the weekly magazine L'Express. François Fillon and Nicolas Sarkozy's campaigns are highlighted, as well as those of Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Emmanuel Macron, and Arnaud Montebourg. The latter states that "one must be skeptical of the current power... and of its adherents." However, a number of experts fault this application's security and recommend others, particularly ones based on an open format (see below, section "Security").
Telegram has enabled animated stickers since version 5.9; these stickers are vector animations in an open JSON format.
The Telegram app was utilized in the South Korean Nth Room case of digital sexual abuse from December 2018 to March 2020.
Following the events on Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021, which resulted in the deletion of numerous Twitter and Facebook accounts, and 25 million downloads in just 72 hours, Telegram declared on January 12, 2021, that it had reached 500 million active users.
How does Telegram work?
1. Create an account on Telegram and select a username:
Enter your phone number in the Telegram app to get started. You are emailed a 4-digit code to verify your ownership. The program will then ask you to enter your first and surname names as well as if you'd like, a profile picture.
2. Choose a new nickname, and change your name, and phone number:
Go to Settings > Edit if you want to change your phone number or don't want to appear as yourself (top right of the screen). You can change or embed:
your username, profile photo or video, first and last name, biography, phone number, and other personal information.
Keep in mind that the Telegram application also gives users the option to add up to three additional accounts, each of which is linked to a different phone number.
3. Prevent other Telegram users from seeing your phone number and photo:
When using Telegram, you can choose to hide your phone number from the receivers of your choice if you don't want anyone to know it. Select Privacy & Security from the options menu, then select Phone Number.
On Telegram, you may control who can see your phone number.
Then, you have three options for deciding who may see your phone number: Everyone, My contacts, and Nobody.
Additionally, you have the option to set exceptions to be "Never visible to" or "Always visible to" and then pick the relevant Telegram contacts from your network.
Your profile photo will be hidden from other Telegram users.
In a similar vein, you can choose to hide your profile photo from specific Telegram users. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Profile photo to accomplish this. You have the choice of selecting My Contacts or Everyone, with the following exclusion: never seen to.
4. Make Telegram friends:
The objective of Telegram, like any messaging service, is to communicate with friends or contacts.
Give your smartphone permission to view your location
You must first give Telegram permission to access your smartphone's phonebook in order to search for new users to talk with on the program. When you are allowed, you may access the list of your friends who have already downloaded the app and discover who is using it the most frequently. You may even filter the list of your contacts based on when they last used the messaging service. To add new contacts, hit on Invite Friends as well.
Locate friends nearby using your location
Telegram gives you the option to let your friends know where you are. When you need to find pals for a date, this can be helpful. Go to Contacts and select "People nearby" to do this. You must first enable this function in your smartphone's settings before using it. Additionally, the program will need permission from your contact to access the location of your smartphone.
5. Connect with all nearby Telegram members.
You may view all nearby Telegram users and the chat groups you can join by using this function. It's useful to know that you can specify how long a contact will have access to your location. There are three choices: for 15 minutes, for an hour, or for as long as eight hours. Disable the location service in your device's settings if you no longer want this information to be shared.
6. Use Telegram to securely begin a private discussion.
Here is the procedure to follow based on your smartphone to begin a private exchange with one of your Telegram contacts:
● If you have an iOS smartphone, press on the profile image of your contact, then pick Start a secret exchange and confirm. You may also accomplish this by tapping on the three dots next to the contact's name.
● If you have an Android smartphone, select New secret exchange from the menu bar at the top left of your screen, enter the name of the contact you wish to exchange confidentially with and then press on the three bars.
7. Check Telegram private messages
There is a strategy you can use to prevent one of your contacts from knowing that you have read their message:
● When you receive a message, turn on airplane mode on your smartphone.
● Read the message by launching the Telegram program.
● Deactivate airplane mode and close the program.
8. On Telegram, hide your most recent connection
The display of your phone number is limited, and you have the following three options:
Everyone.
My Connections
Nobody.
9. Create or join a Telegram group
On Telegram, a group enables several users to join and take part in the same chat. Anyone can transmit files, photos, or messages.
10. Modify or remove a conversational message that was sent.
Telegram has achieved what Twitter users had only dreamed about! The messaging software allows users to freely alter the messages they send, despite the fact that it is not a social network in the traditional meaning of the word. The message to which you have made a change is followed by the word "modified." Simply press and hold the button while choosing Edit to edit a message.
11. Use Telegram to make voice or video calls.
Users of Telegram frequently use the capability to make voice or video calls (since the summer of 2020). Tap on your contact's profile photo while they are in a discussion to do this. Two icons are suggested next to his name, depending on the kind of call you want to place.
12. Use Telegram to send voice or video messages.
Similar to calls, Telegram chats also let you send voice or video messages. Long-press the microphone icon to the right of the input field to record a voice message. Make a brief push on this icon to transform it into the shape of a camera in order to start recording a video message. then continue to hold down the camera symbol. No trial or draft messages, voice or video recordings from a Telegram chat are forwarded to the receiver directly.
13. On Telegram, prevent incoming voicemails from strangers
In Settings > Privacy & Security > Calls, you can disable this option if you don't want to get calls from strangers. You can specify who may call you in this section: everyone, my contacts, or nobody. You can add an exception if you've identified a contact whose calls you want to restrict. Choose Never Allow to accomplish this, then check the contact(s) from the list that follows.
Reviews from users of Telegram
● It is incredibly user-friendly and excellent value for the money. So far, there haven't been any issues, which is wonderful.
● The features of Telegram that I loved the most were the high-quality calls, superb video conferencing, and ability to create up to 2 accounts without interfering with the first account.
● The excellent features of Telegram make it easy to communicate with friends, family, and other people. The chats are private and encrypted from beginning to end thanks to a lock that we can see closed on the emblem of our interlocutor. We can easily and for free create an account. Through the use of our smartphone's airplane mode, the ability to read our messages privately, the ability to lock access to conversations on Telegram, the timer for self-destruction of messages, the ability to create or join channels or groups, the ability to delete or edit a message in a conversation, and the ability to edit and customize the images sent during a conversation, we can all make ourselves invisible. Telegram has a lot of useful features and a significant influence.
Telegram is free!
A cross-platform, free instant messaging (chat) program called Telegram provides higher levels of protection for your communications.
In summary, Telegram is an application with flawless functioning that has very little to be envious of. You may quickly compose a text, make a call, speak with others in a group, or conduct any type of research with it installed on either a computer or a phone. Its constant updates and, in particular, its instantaneous ability to instantly store all files without the fear of data loss makes it even more intriguing.
